DKY’s Squirrels ate from a wide variety of state fair staples and participated in fair-themed activities.
The Fun Committee, a small team serving our staff primarily through food, used a recent staff lunch as an excuse to bring home the tastes and traditions of The Great Minnesota Get Together. For a couple hours in the middle of an otherwise routine Wednesday, our Squirrels ate from a wide variety of state fair staples and participated in fair-themed activities.
Our home-grown versions of the real thing included:
- A Seemingly Endless Path of Concession Tables—Each “food stand” offered its own specialty: Pronto pups, walking tacos, meatballs, gyros, caramel apples, pies, lemonade, Sweet Martha’s cookies and more.
- State Fair Bingo—Colleagues shared their bingo cards from visiting the fair. No one spotted Al Franken, but we did see mullets and American flag tattoos.
- Exhibition Hall—OK, a big table. Everyone brought in an item that represents something they’re proud of or showcases who they are outside of work. With the help of exhibit cards next to each item, we all learned something new about our fellow Squirrels.
- Butter Carving Contest—Several DKYers volunteered to partake in our version of the famous state fair butter sculpting. An impartial judge was on hand to award first, second, third, and honorable mention ribbons.
- All-staff MN State Fair Trivia Contest—Did you know Roosevelt first gave his “speak softly and carry a big stick” speech at the MN State Fair on September 2, 1901?
- Live Video Feed—We projected live video from the actual fair via webcam on the front wall while we snacked and mingled.
And when it was all over, we moseyed back to our desks to fight off sedation for the remainder of the afternoon.
